What a Small World...

As many of you know, I go to kickboxing class every Wednesday night. I absolutely love the class! It's a great workout, and it never fails, the following day leaves me feeling muscles that I've never felt before... I love that feeling! :) And, being that we're in Germany, the class is conducted entirely in German (unless the instructor wants to practice his English skills... then he'll randomly throw some English in for my benefit. :)). My friend, Katrina (who is also American), usually attends the class with me, and being that her German is MUCH better than mine, she tends to translate any necessary information for me.

Well, last night she was unable to attend, so I was left to fend for myself... which, in all honesty, is not really a bad thing. :) I simply walk into the class, find a spot in the very back corner, listen to the instructor and everyone else speak in German (all the while trying to figure out any random words or phrases I might know... which, I have to say, is getting easier the more I'm exposed to German! :)), and then once class begins, I follow along to all the moves (that's actually where the many years of dance comes in handy... it's quite easy for me to catch on to different moves, even when I don't understand what the instructor is telling me. :))... So, last night went smoothly and I was happy that I was getting a great workout... And, then towards the end of class, something rather odd happened...

The girl who had been standing beside me throughout the whole class, approached me. Now, mind you, I had noticed her in the beginning of the class primarily because of her outfit (she had been wearing a t-shirt and sweat pants). I know that sounds strange, but you have to understand what the workout attire is here... Everything is VERY form fitted and typically high end, name brand merchandise. That's the one thing about Germans that I've learned since being here... If they are into a sport, they throw themselves into it whole-heartedly! Even if they've never done this sport, before they begin, they will go out and purchase everything they think they need for the sport, including all of the clothing! It's craziness! (During the summer is when you can really see this part of the culture... Especially when you see people riding bikes that probably have never ridden a bike or haven't for many years, and they are decked out from head to toe in high end, name brand, biking gear... That's pretty funny! :)) So, needless to say, most of the girls in this kickboxing class are decked out in head to toe name brand athletic gear (minus the shoes... for some reason they don't have a clue when it comes to workout shoes here... very strange!). Meanwhile, you have Katrina and I in the kickboxing class... Both of us American, both of us decked out in our random t-shirts, gym shorts or pants, and running shoes... We definitely stand out like a sore thumb! :) Anyways, back to the topic at hand...

I was approached by the girl in the t-shirt and pants. As I typically do whenever a German approaches me, I panic and get that "deer in headlight" look on my face, as I know that I probably won't understand the majority of whatever comes out of their mouth... Nice! So, as normal, as the girl said something to me, instead of trying to understand what she was saying, I panicked and all I could think was, "Oh dear, she's talking to me... What do I say???" :) And then a key word that she said caught me... She said "shirt". At which point, I responded with, "Bitte?" (Excuse me?)... And her response was "I like your shirt. Are you from Michigan?" (Just an FYI, I was wearing a Michigan State t-shirt...) Now, at this point, I was caught a little off guard... All I could think was "Either my German is getting a WHOLE lot better, or this girl is speaking English!" So, I responded with, "Yes, I'm from Michigan. Are you familiar with that state?" (still thinking that she was German...), to which she responded, "Yes, I'm actually from there."

SAY WHAT?! :) Come to find out, she is actually from Michigan, she studied German at U of M (blech!) and she's over here for a year teaching English at a German school (yes, folks, she's completely fluent in German... must be nice!), which is located next to where Brian works!! How crazy is that?! So, we chatted it up for a few minutes, and then decided that we could pick up where we left off during next week's class.

I guess it just goes to show what a small world it is... Here I am taking a kickboxing class in Friedrichshafen, Germany, and I run into a girl that lives only about 30 minutes away from me in Michigan... Definitely not something that happens every day! :)

Fasching, Switzerland, and Motorcycles... What A Weekend!!

Whew! What a whirlwind weekend this was! We went to a Fasching parade on Friday, we headed to Zurich, Switzerland to visit the zoo on Saturday, and we attended the International Motorcycle Show here in Friedrichshafen followed by some rock climbing on Sunday... What a great weekend! :) Now, I could bore you all with every little detail of our weekend... But, instead, I think I'll let the pictures speak for themselves! :)

Brian and I waiting for the parade to start...

Maciej and Brian passing time before the parade... :)

And let the parade begin!!

This Fasching parade was one of the most amazing parades I've ever been to! The costumes are all handmade and the masks are all hand-carved wood... Apparently the costumes are passed down from generation to generation. I was in awe of the amount of detail put into every costume!

The Viking Band...

In my opinion, this was the most bizarre part of the whole experience! Throughout the parade, the people in the parade would go up to random spectators and mess with them! Sometimes they would mess up their hair, or through confetti or hay on them, or take an article of clothing away from them, or even pick them up and throw them over their shoulder and walk away with them!! It was crazy! :) Needless to say, this type of parade would probably not be allowed in the U.S.! :)

Here, one of the people in the parade is messing with one of the spectators. Notice the big stick he's holding up with someone's hat on it, while he also through a whole bunch of confetti onto the poor guy!

These "fish" were pretty cool! Their costumes were pretty impressive!

However, the only downfall, was when they would come up to you and "spit" water in your face... Lovely!

The owls were my favorite!! :)

Each group would carry one of these signs with the name of their group. They would then chant their name as they walked along the parade route, and the crowd would repeat it... Pretty cool!

Notice how this guy has the girl walking behind him... He's got his wooden "pliers" around her neck and is walking her down the parade route... Crazy!

Again, I loved the owls! :)

This poor girl is getting her hair messed up pretty badly! :)

On Saturday, we headed to Zurich and spent the day at the Zurich Zoo!

This little guy was too cute! :)

This snowy owl was gorgeous! It reminded me of Hedwig from Harry Potter! :)

Such a pretty view! What a pretty day it turned out to be!

He was not a very happy tiger! :)

This was my absolute favorite part of the day!! As we walked out of the monkey house, we came across this scene! They were having a "Penguin Parade" at the zoo! They let the penguins out of their area and let them wander along the sidewalk for a bit... It was the cutest thing!! :)

The whole time I watched them, all I could think of was the movie "Happy Feet" and how much my nephew, Kaden, loves that movie! He would have thoroughly enjoyed being there that day!! This pic's for you, Kaden! :)

On their way back into their area... Too cute! :)

These poor flamingos looked a little chilly!

Brian and I in the Amphibian house...

On Sunday, we headed over to the Friedrichshafen Messe to check out the International Motorcycle Show that was taking place this weekend... Pretty cool!

This was a very nice Harley! :)

I loved the pink Vespa! :)

This is on Brian's wish list!

As well as this one... :)

Brian found his new ride...

Maciej found his...

And I found mine! :) I could definitely have alot of fun on this!! :)
